Witch specie except komodo can swallow the largest prey?

Old tales of niloticus gulping down the family cat, are common, but in reality iv never seen a large enough niloticus swallowing anything larger then an adult rat, not even close to a medium cat.
Just for fun, any opinions?

To swallow the largest prey item, a croc monitor(largest oral opening). To digest the largest bolus, water monitor, largest stomach. And the best ability to get very hot without overheating(they can lower their body temps the most efficient).

JeffL had a nile that was given to him, that he gave to a zoo in Fla, that was about 6 1/2 feet, I got to hold that thing, I have no doubts that individual could swallow a med adult cat, but most likely not a large adult(but it may). I do question if that nile has the ability to actually kill a healthy cat. Most likely couldn't catch it, unless the cat was in a self destructive mood.

I have read the the largest nile was just shy of nine feet. I would think that individual could swallow a large cat.

Of course, this is a question of extremes, the largest prey item must relate to the largest individual, not the average of any species. Althought they may be one in the same. Thanks for the fun question. Cheers

I am actually agreeing with Frank (amazing huh? lol). Old Skritch lost alot of weight in my care and actually started to move quite well. SO well in fact that the neighbor's rooster got into the cage. One of the BIG roosters (white ones). Needless to say, I got some great pics and yes, he could easily swallow a cat after watching that scene of Skritch swallowing the rooster whole.

Compared to a 6ft 6 inch monitor. Normally he has no fear of her, but tonight he wanted nothing to do with her. 13 lbs of crazy tabby, 33 lbs of albig.

For comparison, a 4ft flavi-argus, an older picture. The plexiglas is always dirty with that lizard.

For comparison, a 50 lb puppy and a 13 lb cat kissing each other. Now that puppy is over 60 lbs, still alot of growing to do.

big cat

That is Stew. 22lbs of raw feline!! At first glance he seems like a fat ass, but he really is just a big cat, thats a little over weight.

LOL, that one looks like it could give a Nile a run for it's money

Hmmmmmmmmm Those one foot square tiles sure make that Albig look less then 6'6", it appears more like 4'6" or 5'. Its not that I do not believe you, I am only going from the pic.

I do have a pic of JeffL and his nile, if he permits me to post it I will. It makes your Albig appear little. Cheers

Well, those cats are pretty huge, but I think he could handle an average cat after seeing him take down that giant rooster (whole). Frank, you can post if you wish, but people need to remember that was soon after I got him. He lost most of that fat (I would post one myself - especially the rooster one, but I just moved and have no idea where all my pics are right now).

Around here.
One just had kittens a few houses up from me, our tomcat is more than twice her snout to vent length, he makes her look more like a rodent when she walks past the back door in front of him.
I try to keep our cat athletic in shape, our vet tells me that the average tomcat he sees that is Scoobys size weighs 32lbs. I guess there is something to say for feeding a raw diet. In fact my sisters tomcat came from the same farm, he is 34 lbs, and looks alot like the other cat above, but is shorter than Scooby in length and height. I think they should be able to make a 6ft vertical leap from a sitting position to get an idea of their physical shape.

newstorm Aug 21, 2007 03:20 PM

Yeah, Stew's size doesnt permit any crazy vertical jumps. I did see my other cat, Coon, jump vertically from a stand still to the top of our refrigerator.

Here is Coon, one bad ass picture...

Up on his tree.
Also, wanting to be put on the floor badly.

A few years ago, with Sobek. Also it keeps it about monitors, lol.

He had just got it and had not even taken it home yet, so no yakking on how fat it is or he is. Hmmmmmmmm it is. Cheers

We were sitting in someones backyard eating bbq hamburgers with that thing wandering around, I kept looking over my shoulder expecting it to steal my burger. Jefe was there too, the good old days.........

The first piece of tile in front of the steps is 8 inches, the second tile is a full tile (up to 20 inches), and the 3rd tile which is in front of her shoulder (32 inches), even though her neck and head are pointed off to the side her nose is still only 2 inches from the end of the next tile (thats 44 inches to the end of the 4th tile) you can see the lines easily, Im not that good at putting tiles down.
Subtract the 8 inch piece of tile, straighten her neck out some, and you have a monitor that over a year ago, was about 3ft snout to vent. In fact a year ago she was 34.5 inches snout to vent, and 43.5 inches of tail.

Here are some more references for you..
One gallon plastic jug sitting next to her in the basking spot, 2 years ago.

Nose to nose with just plexiglas to separate them (over a year ago), at the time a 45 inch flaviargus.

2 years ago or more, Ive been 6ft tall for many years now, shes grown a few inches since.

SHvar Aug 20, 2007 11:26 PM

Although I dont know how serious they were about this...
A person signed up here and posted that they were running out of kittens at the local shelter ,and "free to good home" kittens to feed a nile that was 6ft long.
I personally dont believe one word of it, why, simple, a good friend has a nile that is over 5.5ft long, her nile cant swallow anything larger than a large rat, in fact Id venture to say that his head is barely larger than my flavi-argus's head. He was introduced to a 4 week old kitten as an experiment (glad I wasnt there to see it personally), he took one look at the kitten, ran so fast up the side of his cage, then hid under his water dish, he hid for almost a week without coming out.

jobi Aug 20, 2007 11:46 PM

Well size for size albigularis can swallow twice as large as nil’s can, so I am with you on this one.
