Very cranky ball, was tame before??

gothicbambi Aug 20, 2007 02:11 PM

Alright I have a baby ball python, she is some were around the age of 2-3 months, she was tame when I got her and very nice not snapy at all. The guy I got her from said to feed her pinkys, but I've been giving her hoppers, she eats every 5-7 days and for the past 2 months that I've had her she has been very tame and calm, she loved to be handled. But about a week ago I took her water bowl out to change it and she got ahold of my finger, she let go fast, I didnt think anythging of it because it was close to feeding time, but ever sense shes been realy cranky and nippy, is this normal? She just eat a hopper 2 days ago? Is something wrong with her? Thanks for any help! ~ Georgia

I think she needs to be upgraded to a bigger size food. I would give her a small mouse at least. I think she is just hungry.I know I get cranky when I am hungry. Try a bigger mouse give her a day to digest then try holding her I think she will be alot better.

Sounds like stress to me - double check your husbandry - I won't assume it is, but if that wood log is her hide - it's completely inappropriate - change it out with something smaller, more enclosed and dark. Also like mentioned feed her something a little bigger than fuzzy mice - she should be able to handle an adult mouse/rat pup with no problems.

(CJBianco explaining the origins of the BP market.)
"In the beginning Bob created the Ball Python market. And the market was without morph, and wild traits were upon the industry. And Bob said, Let there be morph, and there was morph. And Bob saw the morph, that it was good; and Bob divided the morph from the wild trait. And Bob called the morph Albino, and the wild trait Normal. And the Albino and the Heterozygous Albino were the first investment.

Sometimes they get a little cranky around shedding time. Just a thought. Hope this helps...

I'm going to reiterate what everyone else has already said -- at her size, she should be on adult mice/rat pups. She probably isn't getting enough to eat which can stress them out and make them constantly seek food. You should also change your hide to something that is dark, snug, and round -- with no openings except for one place to enter and exit from. Those logs do not provide any sense of security and if given a choice, these snakes will choose something else. Also make sure you have two hides, one on each end of the enclosure -- she shouldn't have to choose between temperature and security. Good luck!
