prolapse problem

krim5 Aug 20, 2003 12:24 PM

Just wanted to tell my little horror story.....I came home yesterday to find Slider with a prolapsed penis. AFter rinsing him off and discovering what it was, I went in the house to get a container to soak him in. When I came back out, I found one of the other turtles chomping on it like it was food. I was so disgusted and felt terrible for Slider. So today was amputation for the mangled organ. He is expected to recover and be all well, but what a terrible thing to experience.

I'd recommend to anyone who sees a prolapse to separate the animal into a warm soak immediately, then go get a bit of mineral oil or vaseline to put on the prolapse to see if the extra lubrication will allow the animal to retract it. If it doesnt' retract, head to the vet.

I'm sorry your turtle had this bad experience. Hopefully it will recover fine.

This happened to a friend of mines turtle(also an RES)and it was taken to a vet who was all set to amputat as he didn`t know what he was looking at,he made a call to a more experienced vet and was told to cover the organ with sugar,it instantly shrunk and withdrew back where it was meant to be.Lucky for the turtle concerned no-one had chewed on it.

I've heard of people doing that for Bearded Dragons in the case of a prolapsed colon. Give them a long soak in sugar water, and it usually retracts. Good input. Thanks!
