curviers problem

cpcreptile Aug 21, 2007 10:51 AM

I noticed today that my dwarf caiman has a white spot on the tip of his nose. I have no clue what this is from. I thought at first he could be rubbing his nose on the glass but when i looked at it close it seemed like it was forming over the skin, not being rubbed away. Any ideas? is this a type of infection?

My spec caiman had a few similar white spots on the top of his head. Asking other folks I gathered it could be that :

1. Unhygiene conditions
2. Caiman needs to bask to get UV rays. Have the basking lamp on (mine never comes out of water)
3. Could be some skin infection

See if it persists, I have no idea what caused my caimans, although I suspect I fed him a rodent from a pet shop and maybe that rodents diet was messed up. It cleared up within a week and he has been doing well. He has eaten 45 pinkies in the last six weeks (leaving out big worms, rosy red minnows etc). Good luck!

Are you feeding him dead pinkies or live? I tried getting mine to eat a dead pinky but he wouldnt. I wiggle it around infront of him and nothing works. He hasnt been eating the crickets i give him either but the other night i threw one in and it wasnt there the next morning, so in the past 2 weeks ive owned him hes ate a total of ONE CRICKET.

I am feeding him live pinkies. I feed him around 10 a week or sometimes more. Costs about 88 cents for each. Pinkies are his main diet. Before you go to bed, throw the pinkies in and leave him all alone. Give him 2-3 days and let us know how it works out. What is his water temp ? You can get one of those from Petsmart (costs about $20 bucks or so).

I try and keep his water temp between 75 and 80. I bought one of those water heaters and i put it in the water and turn it on and it blew up! Im getting a new heater today. Im guessing i leave the live pinks on the land part of his cage so they dont drown correct?

white spot is still there too and i have no idea what it can be, seems its got a little bigger too. Theres no conclusions on what this could be?

I believe the water temp is too low. Many folks on the forum think 80 is the best while other feels it should be 85. I keep mine at 83. Get a marineland water heater from Petsmart. Its pretty good. I think mine was 200W for a 55 gallon tank.
ALSO, get one of those suction water digital temperatures. It will give you an accurate reading. Temperature is SUPER important. You can leave the pinkies anywhere, I leave mine on land, make sure to leave him all alone for a few hours.
