If you are talking about eastern hoggies, no one rellay knows the answer to that question yet. The babies are not born black, but turn as they mature.

I think it would probably be correct to label them as hyper-melanistic since they gain excess melanin as they age. Much like what happens with black rat snakes and black racers.
