I'm no expert, but it looks like a whipsnake. The head shot is pretty blurry. It would help to see the whole snake so we could get an idea of how long it is and what part of the US you live in.
Well.. I bought this snake at a pet store for $30 claiming it to be an Egyptain Racer... But I live in Ok....

they will have better info on what kind of snake you've got and how to care for it. Don't be too shocked or put off though if you get flamed for buying an animal without knowing what it was or how to care for it. Not giving you sh!t, just warning you that you will get flamed but persevere and get the info you and your snake need. Also, you don't have to hold him behind the head. It stresses them out and a snake that small can't possibly hurt you if it bites unless it is venomous and I don't think any pet stores sell hots.
