Common Breeding Mistakes

brianray Aug 22, 2007 03:28 AM

I have read a lot on breeding and I plan on trying to breed a couple normals in the next few months.
Basically I am looking for any common mistakes that a rookie like myself might need to watch out for.
It's also a chance to share some funny stories

Thanks in advance!
Brian

Brian,
How do you have your snakes set up. Do you have them in racks if so,do they have belly heat or back heat. Do you have them on thermostats.Just curious.

I have each ball in a 40 gallon breeder, I don't have enough snakes for a rack system yet. They have heating pads on the sides of the tanks. I don't have thermostats but I do have rheostats to control temps.

what type of pads do yo have on the sides of the tanks?

I ask because they will only heat the glass itself, does not do much for the ambient temperature of the enclisure itself.
Might want to put them on the bottom or find something else to use to heat the snake.
You will never get the right temps that way.

make sure you have a male and a female!

Just being a funny guy.
Best of luck to you, I am sure you will do fine.

Just make sure they have the right temps, fed properly before breeding and nature will take over form there.

Problems you may run into:

1. Mistaken Identity - oops she's a he or visa versa
2. Cooling too cool - ooops RI
3. Breeding too young - oops should should I call a vet
4. Frigid Females - Insecure Males - aka why aren't the copulating???)
5. Over breeding - Don Juan needs a break!!!
6. Not feeding / feeding too much (there are a couple of schools of thought on this one)
7. How to palpate
8. Figuring out if she ovulated/is gravid

Eggs:

1. She's late laying
2. What kind of incubator
3. What kind of thermostat
4. What kind of egg box
5. Perlite vermiculite or no substrate
4. Too wet
5. Too dry
6. Too hot
7. Too cold
8. Temperatures fluctuate too much
9. Rolled eggs
10. They haven't pipped yet
11. They won't come out of their eggs

Babies:
1. They won't eat
2. They bite
3. I need more film for my camera
4. The forum is getting sick of seeing my baby pictures

Enjoy!!!

JET Pythons

(CJBianco explaining the origins of the BP market.)
"In the beginning Bob created the Ball Python market. And the market was without morph, and wild traits were upon the industry. And Bob said, Let there be morph, and there was morph. And Bob saw the morph, that it was good; and Bob divided the morph from the wild trait. And Bob called the morph Albino, and the wild trait Normal. And the Albino and the Heterozygous Albino were the first investment.
