Leo -VS- Cats

zachattack Aug 22, 2007 11:28 AM

Somehow between 9 and 11 this morning my cats removed sherman my leo from his cage. My roomate found them messing with him at her door. Unfortunatly he had already dropped his tail and sustained some puncture wounds to his head and many surface abrasions on his back and belly. I cleaned him and put some neosporin on his wounds and changed his substrate to paper towels. He sustained some head trauma and has yet to open his eyes, though he is breathing and trying to navigate his tank. Is it possible he will be blind and if so will he be able to live a relatively normal life? Any furthur help or suggestions from knowledgeable Leo people would be appreciated.
Thanks, Zach

Zach,
Sorry to hear about this mishap. It sounds like you handled it the best you could.

It depends on how bad the damage was as to whether the leo has lost its sight or not. If it has, it may be able to feed just fine if you place food/water/supplement dishes close enough to the entrance of its hide.

Watch the leopard closely the next few days. It might just be fine (fingers crossed)

Thanks for the input. I feel like taking him in will just either lead to euthanasia or a really expemsive surgery. My major concern now isnt the eyes its the trauma to his head. its been a few hours now and its getting really deep reds like a nasty bruise. its hard to tell what is swollen and what is penetrated. He seems to be relatively mobile and lively though. he has been walking around the cage but i dont know if it is mindless wandering or thermo regulating.

Well, I'm sure the last thing you want is to have the leopard suffer. You may need to make a really tough decision if you think your leopard is not doing well. At this point, I would closely monitor it to determine if it is suffering or not.
