Vet. Costs

TBL Aug 22, 2007 07:38 PM

Hi

I now that some of you in other areas pay more for a vet. vist but Wow!, I haven't had to go in a few years, and I just went yesterday with my L. Gecko and was hit with a bill for $146.00. Exotic examination: $49.00, two different meds. $58.00, Stool specimen exotic: $39.00.

You have to take them if necessary, because you love them, but it is hard when things are tight now. Wish there was a way to get some help with expenses. Vet. doesn't give discounts.

Tell me some of your worst costs, for the same type of thing I had to get for my gecko.

Take Care, TBL

I've had some similar situations, though in my case it has usually been more for the basic exam (I've paid $70 for that before) and less for the stool specimen and meds. Glad you got your little one to the vet though, in that other thread it really sounded like it was necessary. Nice to see someone taking responsibility even though it's not easy. Lots of people come on here and say something like, "I can't afford a vet." Whenever I see that I get all angry and think, "If you buy a pet, you accept responsibility for its health and care, regardless of cost. Suck it up and pay for the vet!" Glad to see that some people aren't that way, and here's hoping your gecko's problems clear up.

I agree, my costs are roughly in that neighborhood. My vet does offer a smaller fee for additional animals at the same exam- like $70 for the exam, and then each addl animal exam done at the same time is only 40 or so. Meds and fecals run about the same. If it makes you feel any better, I am looking at at least $200 for the surgery to remove the abcecsses in my other post. This is for a rescue I took in, and there will be additional costs for follow-up visits as well Im sure.

im not too sure if this happens in the US, but here in the UK we can get pet insurance for all kinds of animals. cats and dogs are the basic that every pet insurer does, but there are usually leaflets at vets or you could ask your vet for contact info. here, i can get a full years coverage for £80 payed over 12months, and they cover upto £200 in vet fee's each visit, but you also have to get your leo put through a physical to make sure its in good heealth so your not trying to just get a quick and cheap vet trip. they also have to be over 6months old but in the end it can work out for the better if your leo should come down with something and a trip to the vets is needed.

hope this helps you all
