feeding cycluras meat

huckandtuck Aug 23, 2007 02:00 AM

is it ok to give a tiny amount of turkey or hard boiled eggs to my rock iguanas ? i know that too much meat will give them gout, but is a tiny bit of meat allright?im talking about feeding an adult cuban, less than a spoonfool of ground turkey, or less than 1/8 of a hard boiled egg every once in a while.

id say its best to stay away from any kind of meat all together. plus it cost more than greens so why bother. i have a 8 yr old cuban and two 6 yr old rhinos all raised on just greens and mazuri tortoise chow once a month or less.

I think its keepers choice. They dont need it but they do eat meat in the wild. Its documented that they eat carrion, birds and crabs, even their own hatchlings. I have see it or pictures of it. I dont think anyone knows how much is to much. I have seen film of hippos eating a zebra but I bet they dont get meat in zoos. Cyclura seem to love it but my kids love cake but they dont get it all the time.
you could play it, "better safe than sorry" or "anything in moderation". I dunno its up to you

I'll give my rhino's monkey chow, pinky mice, even those can o grasshoppers only a few times a year. They could do without it, but I like to give them a little candy every once in awhile. I have seen no negative affects from this. Moderation is key.

On occasion one of my female rhinos gets out of her room and heads straight for the cat food dish. Sometimes I am home to get her away from it and sometimes not. I would say this occurs roughly 6-10 times per year. I figure thats her meat portion of her diet. I dont go out of my way to feed it to my other rhino and my caymanensis. I will give them an occasional superworm for the entertainment value but I am guessing it amounts to maybe a dozen supers a year??
