Feeding question?

regnadkcin Aug 23, 2007 10:22 AM

I was just wondering if getting babies to eat can be a worry? I read a post where Shannon replied that she has had babies that did not eat until the following spring. That being said, I still wonder how much effort I should put into getting them to eat. Referring to a hatch of annulata. I have so far offered a couple of them a live pinky and left it overnight - no luck. I was just planning on waiting for them to get hungry enough.

My year is winding down but I may still have a couple cool things to show.
Thanks cole,

Sure enough! The male is a Jimmy Mabe line critter and the female is WC. Here's a photo of her.

Nice snake, Shannon. I dig the dark bicolor look they have. The male is dog-tame but the female is pure b*tch! LOL They've been "lovin' it up" and I've got 5 big eggs cooking. Are yours doing anything this year?

Nope, I just have two single males from that old line.

Winding Down? My female DH Hybino just laid. It took 3 or 4 sheds before she would mate. When do you put yours down and take yours out of brumation? Derek

It can be. Annulata are usually fairly easy, but certain localities and bloodlines may be more tricky. Many NA milks have a tendency to prefer lizards or at least lizard-scented pinks for their first meals. That said, many of my hatchlings wait for 2-4 weeks post hatch to begin feeding. Some even wait until after their first winter to begin. If your neonates don't start taking the live pinks within 3 weeks or so, I'd try frozen/thawed. Then I'd brain the f/t pinks. If that failed, I'd scent with skink or gecko (one frozen lizard can scent LOTS of pinks). That should get you through, but if you're still having issues come fall, post again and someone will help you out.
