A new jewel...

CrimsonKing Aug 23, 2007 07:27 PM

....I always grin when these guys pop out.
Here he's just minutes out and his sib is right behind in the egg seen at the bottom right.
Sadly I only get a few each year but may add some more females next season...

They are cool Derek. I don't know why they aren't more popular.
I mean, when you can get these guys for less than $50. how can you go wrong?
Calm, beautiful, etc...

Mark:
How do you hibernate these guys? I live in FL too and was wondering if it gets cold enough for them. I always heard they need to get REAL cold for a while to produce good eggs.

CrimsonKing Aug 23, 2007 08:55 PM

Mike I do nothing special or different for them. They are treated exactly as my others. I try to keep the fairly constant but as you know that can be tough. One day (in the winter in FL)it may be as low as 40F but the next may be back up to 80F.
Whatever happens...happens...
I like it when the temps dip down to 50F or below, but I don't count on it...
In fact, the grandparents to my current pair were bred here with no "cool down" whatsoever.

Congratulations Mark.
It always amazes me that people can get these mountain species to do well in the heat/humidity, and where the highest point on the map is a thruway overpass...
Many moons ago I tried my hand at some pyros and did not do so well. That is when I decided to stick with animals that will thrive in spite of my efforts. No pyros, no teeny milks ( though sometimes I want to try L.t. elapsoides) and probably no hognose. My hat's off to you and anyone else breeding pyro's.

Thanks Dave, as I told Mike, I do nothing special for them. They must get used to it like we do...
That said, I have the a.c. on to keep them cooler than 95F today!
C'mon winter!

Nice Mark. I have a pair of '04s, and the male is 5 times bigger than the female. She eats about every third or 4th time as the rest. How'd you end up doing at the show? Thanks, Derek
