Tips for syringe feeding

jschilling Aug 23, 2007 08:15 PM

I got some antibiotics from my vet to feed my turtle via syringe, and I'm having some trouble getting him to open his mouth. I know a few years ago I was able to get him to take a medicine from the syringe by tilting him backwards slightly and massaging his jaw until he opened up, but that trick isn't working anymore. Does anyone have any tips or techniques that might help? Thanks in advance.

I once watched a vet use a laminated blockbuster video membership card.

I usually use an appropriately sized flat screwdriver, but you have to be very gentle and careful...you don't want to crack the beak or lose control of the screwdriver.

I have one I am treating for parasites and absolutely cannot get her mouth open so I offer her a superworm and when she is taking her last bite or two, I try to get the syringe in when her mouth is open. It isn't pretty, but it works to get the medication in. Of course, they've got to be willing to eat.

Usually prying with something works.

I use an old credit card, works every time.
Some books suggest using a soft rubber coated spoon made for human babies.
One way or another prying is usually what works best for me.
You can pull an "arm" straight away from the body, some box turtles will open up when you do that but the problem is once you get the mouth open you need another hand to put the medicine in.
Have you tried food? Sometimes you can fool them by hiding meds in food- IF they'll eat it.
