Dragon morph confusion.

Dynamohum1 Aug 20, 2003 03:55 PM

I am just getting into dragons after a long time out of the hobby, I have questions about the color morphs. It seems that there is no consensus on what color is what, I see "patternless" dragons listed that in the photos clearly have a light pattern, I see reds listed that are not very red, and a wide range of orange, citrus seems to be greenish or yellow and green well you get the picture. Also what makes a blood red a blood red? Are breeders just hatching out clutches and calling the babies whatever they look like when it is time to sell? Sometimes I see parents pictured and that may or may not be helpfull. Is there any line breeding that works with these guys? Do the colors breed true? and if not why are the babies from good colored parents worth more?

babies from high colored parents even when they dont show the colors are worth more to some because they carry those high color genes and therefore have more of a chance of having high colored offspring. Seeing the parents is a good indicator of what a baby "can" look like, but there are no definates, even a bright baby can turn into a dull adult and vise versa. there was a post yesterday on color morphs etc, you can read that also. Blood red is i beleive is a line that came from Dragons Den, they are red phase dragons, but really very red and so kevin appropriately called his reds "bloods" Sandfires come from sandfire dragon ranch, to me most true sandfires look like orange or red phase dragons it just a name, not a morph. this is the thread from yesterday.....

its all up for interpretation

Q and A, both of you are correct.
(:

Yes, it seems like most people these days make up names for phases, (fun with marketing 101...) Seeing pics of both parents will give you a better idea of what the offspring will ultimately look like rather than buying a hatchling based solely on "blood red X sandfire yellow" and a canned pic. Even then, the color will usually vary quite considerably.
Before, the color phase names gave you an idea of where the animals were initally obtained from, but a lot of that has gone out the window in recent years.
Because the genepool is so limited in this country, line breeding or any type of inbreeding seems to do a lot more harm than good. There are a lot of screwed up dragons floating around out there. Especially within the last couple years - it's really sad.

See? I check in once in awhile!
Take it easy,
Liz

Thanks!
This fourm moves so fast these days... looks like I need to learn about the fancy smilies, too...
Anyway, I was just looking below, (Kevin emailed me a pic earlier but it didn't come up) but I'm pretty sure that orange fellow is one of our guys, I can pick 'em out anywhere!
I almost posted below, (but thought it might be obnoxious, so I didn't...) Most of our hatchlings are still really gold, (not that I'm biased or anything...) but I have a couple reds hanging out here, too.
Thanks again,
Liz

Too few care about genetic lines and avoiding inbreeding or face the fact there are some problems out there caused from them. It is always refreshing to know that some breeders are making a strong effect at improving those line than continuing to mix it more.

Thanks! I really should check in more often, but you guys always seem to be on top of things. Just about everytime I look in with an answer, it's already there.
