putting together a new tank...

somegirl Aug 20, 2003 03:56 PM

cause im getting a new little guy friday from one of you guys
*does a little happy dance*

so, tomorrow i need to set him up a nice little home. im wondering about the cheapest way to do it...can i actualyl just use flourescents and bulbs with reflectors from home depot? all money saving suggestions are welcome; this will be my last purchase of anything except food until somebody hires me

you mean florecent bulbs and fixtures? sure you can get those from home depot. are you using a mercury vapor bulb for heat and UVB?

if not i suggest you can buy the florecent fixtures from homedepot, then go and get yourself at least one UVB tube, the other if a double fixture can be just a regular florecent. the dome light can be a regular lightbulb, a clear one is best as they are the brightest. make sure you get yourself a digital thermometer also to be sure you have the correct basking and ambient temps in your enclosure.

Have you gotten your tank already? If not, I was at Wal-Mart yesterday and they have rubbermaid bins that are 42 inches long and about 16 deep and 18 high. They were about 13 dollars and can serve as a home for your dragons until they become adults.

i havent boguht anything yet; ill get his enclosure set up for him tomorrow and pick him up friday. i cant wait!
the only thing i dont like about the idea of rubbermaids is not being able to observe the little guy all the time. i dont mind the cost of a 20L tank so much, its all the other thigns he needs good to know most of that can be acquired at home depot for a lot less than evil petsmart charges

i use those as my med tubs and travel tubs, easy to set up if i go somewhere for a few days, just pile them together, throw all the lights etc in the top tub and off ya go

just lay a screen across the top and put the light on it, make sure it doesnt touch the plastic tho, cause yes, it will melt it

maybe ill just have to go for it, i can always change later.
the other option is taking my boas out of my 20L and giving them a sweater box and letting X (does he have a name yet?) have the tank
