poop... poop and more poop........

reiko Aug 20, 2003 04:01 PM

My little guy just never stops ! he eats like a pig and poops like a rabbit, well just about, hes going 3 times a day sometimes. He eats like mad, i would say hes about 12 weeks old, he eats about 60-70+ crickets and silks daily, went through 500 crickets in the last week and a half just for him, as well as just ravaging his salads and pellets all day long, never seen a baby chase down his salad dish like he does, jumps up on it before i even get to put it on the ground. He also gets the odd baby superworm as a treat, just the tiny ones, he loves those. His system seems to be running well, im keeping him well hydrated and also he has been getting the acidophiliz for the past 3 days and i gave them all a round of worm guard last week, happy lil guy.. hes gaining 2-3 grams daily and gained 1/2 an inch from saturday to monday, hes a fiesty guy too, so much for having another baby dragon in the house, this guy is growing to be as big as a house well just thought i would post how Daigh was doing, we had a bit of a worry a bit back about him, he stopped eating and looked bad, but jumped right back, these little guys really keep you on your feet.....

I know exactly what you mean! The malnourished year and a half old dragon that I am babysitting has an appetite just like you described. When I took her in she was about 70 grams! Now she's doubled that in two weeks. Geez, is it healthy for them to put that much weight on that fast? She eats everything in her path and then some! She's the household garbage disposal.

Thanks for sharing the funny story about your verocious eater! It's always good to hear when a beardie is doing so well.

that its better for them to grow and gain slowly, but its hard to draw the line and stop a baby dragon from eating that seems always hungry. i could cut down on silks and crickets and let him to his pellets and salad but i dont want to hamper his growth either, i figure they know whats enough for them, carrick grew healthy and at year and 2 months is still growing so im trying to do the same with lil Daigh, its really hard to draw the line when feeding a baby, an adult its easy, but babies being that they need to fuel that rapid growth need so much more... something to think about i guess...

glad to hear the dragon you took in is doing well! do you have any pictures of the lil one?

they really just jump in length sometimes..

have you had a fecal done? i had this happen with carrick, he ate and ate and ate so well, but was growing very slowly, turned out he was loaded with coccidia, this was when he was just a tiny thing 4 inches, i treated him with albon and it was all downhill from there, he grew in leaps and bounds.....

i would think the same applies to your dragon, i mean she needs what she eats, 70 grams for an adult is tiny, if she is doing well on what you are feeding her i would think you are doing great for her, so nice to have a dragon that wasnt doing well really start to thrive and grow, im sure shes much happier for it certianly much healthier

I agree with what you said about not hampering how much they can eat. If they are hungry - then let them eat. I'll get some photos of her hopefully by tomorrow.

I just have one dilema... I have grown attached to the little one and just hate to see her leave and go back to that lady who had her for over a year and fed her nothing but GREEN BEANS! I just can't imagine. But the lady seems interested in learning about beardies so I'm gradually teaching her. In the mean time, she is in the process of moving and I have agreed to keep her for another week or so. It's going to be so hard to let her go. Hopefully I will be able to keep in touch with the lady and see the little one as she grows to be a beautiful adult-sized dragon. Or maybe I'll get lucky and the lady will let me keep her and fully rehabilitate her. Ohhhh, the drawbacks of rescuing.... ugh.

well hope it works out... know how you must get attatched, maybe she will let ya keep her and if not at least you can provide her with as much info as possible, its amazing how many people own animals out there and have no clue on how to care for them.

The female i picked up this past weekend form dachiu at the daytona expo (chris allen red x sandfire red) Is a destroyer of crickets and mealies as well. 20-30 crickets a night plus 25 mealies on top of big bowl of salad, otherwise she won't eat her greeens. Im really happy about this cuz i want her to be a big dragon since i plan to breed her one day (a long time from now) in other news my blood male from dragons den ate a whole spanking 10 mealies today which is up from the 4 crickets he had been eating hopefully i can get a fecal done tommorrow see what the problem is main problem in that though is he barely ever poops and whne he does i always find it to late. Just thought i would let you know how things are going.

good to hear she is doing well, be careful with those mealies tho, they can cause impactions, they have a very thick chitin and are hard to digest, if you want to feed more worms silkworms are a good way to go, you can feed as many as you want, they are nutritious and you arent running the risk like with mealies. make sure they are both staying well hydrated and the temps are good its great when they really enjoy their food

I am so happy he has bounced back so well. there is just something special about a dragon that you take in and thrives so well, you know you gave them a chance they did not have and they seem to know it too!

Blanca was 34 grams at 1 year when she arrived July 1 and loaded with coccidia, today she weighed 157 grams and has grown 2 inches in six weeks...fiesty when she arrived and hissing at me, she is a big baby now and demands attention.... they are so precious

nothing like seeing a baby dragon really love his meals, dealt with handfeeding and sick babies and its just so sad, makes me so pleased to see him eat so well!
