Hatchling without eyelids

foxden Aug 24, 2007 01:24 PM

I had two leopard gecko eggs hatch a couple days ago, but one of the hatchlings didn't look right. When I looked closely, I realized that he didn't seem to have eyelids. He can't close his eyes or keep them hydrated, so they have begun to dehydrate. I've been putting drops of water on them, but it only momentarily seems to help. I'm arranging to take him to the vet. Has anyone else seen this before? Do you have advise to helping me take care of this little guy?

Your problem is almost certainly temp fluctuations in incubation.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. I searched for "leopard gecko fluctuations in incubation" after reading your post and found a few different places where people posted birth defects because of temperature fluctuations, primarily eye defects such as the problems my hatchling has. I will pay much closer attention to my incubator temps and make adjustments. In the mean time I will continue to take care of the blind baby gecko. Thanks again for your help.

No problem at all. It's a joy to help those who also know how to help themselves to all the wonderful research opportunities out there.
