skin size, measuring length ??

snailqueen87 Aug 24, 2007 05:36 PM

I just watched Snail shed (still a very cool thing to see!) and as usual I measured the skin to give a rough indication of how much she had grown.
What I was wondering is, if the skin comes off in one big piece as it does with her, how much longer is that than she actually is?
Her skin is now 45" so I'm thinking she's maybe only a bit smaller than this? I've heard of a program you can use to measure the size using a photograph but haven't been able to find it.

Thanks for any input

In my experience the length of the skin is greatly distorted as all the space between the scales is now pulled straight. It can be about 1.5 times the length of the actual snake, maybe even longer. Hope this helps

Yeah thought it'd be something like that, her skin looks like it came from a beastie! lol
Thanks for the quick response

Just what I was looking for, thanks!

Skin is typically around 20% larger. if you use serpwidgets program then it is easiest to place the snake close to a bill ($1,$5, etc.) because a bill is 6"
