breeding carpet mutt?

killr_silhouette Aug 24, 2007 06:50 PM

i have a large male Carpet Python, not really sure if he is jungle, coastal, or anything...he's probably just the product of a bunch of different ones...

but he has the sweetest personality, and i was considering breeding him...

what would you guys reccommend?

what would make a neat cross?

there are so many choices...especially if you want to get crazy with carpalls and carpondros but i think those are pretty difficult to produce...

i dont think he's ever been bred, so i dont know how he would respond as far as how aggressive of a breeder he is...

"If in doubt...breeding it to a jag"

Thats what many people do...Honestly, breeding it to just any normal phase such as a Jungle, Coastal, or Irian Jaya...will result in ugly babies...honestly...

Jags seem to be that cure all, that if you have a funky, wierd, or whatever carpet...the babies will at least half of the babies will come out jag something...Having half the clutch be a Jag something is better than whole clutch of just somethings...

Of course this is just my opinion, which weither people like it or not is completely ok to post...

DISCLAIMER...I have never owned a jag nor bred a jag, but following the forums, and Carpet Herpetoculture...it seems to be the growing "Thing" to do...And trust me, at least maybe half of the clutch will be cool looking jags...the other half will be basically what you would have gotten if you where to have bred it to a coastal...(that is if you use a Coastal Jag)

IMO, it looks like a nice banded Coastal or Jungle type animal. So breed it to something similar and perhaps accentuate the banding by tracking down another well banded animal. But whatever the case, it is your snake, you earned it. And therefore you can follow your heart and breed it to whatever you wish to. Personally I would recommend a high percentage Diamond cross, maybe an IJ (pictured here), or go in the opposite direction with a Striped Coastal Carpet and see what pops up or even a nice red Bredls (striped or normal) if you want. Just find a really eyecatching mate of any sort and go for it. A morph may not be a bad idea either though lol. Jags are great but there's others too. Just remember to have fun!

What Yasser said, when I saw the picture the great banding jumped right out at me. I’d either breed him with a coastal and/or jungle (like you, I suspect this snake already has a little of each) that has great banding also. Of course, a jag wouldn’t be bad either. Forget the carpalls and carpondros. I’ve got nothing against hybrids, it’s just that the carpondros I’ve seen are IMO less attractive than common jungles or GTPs.

SMOKIN, Yasser! Gotta love it when people remember why we keep snakes in the first place! FUN!

Lately, I've had a thing for striped carpets. There's such a good chance the striping will influence the pattern of the offspring, and they're pretty economical, so you don't have to worry about investing in a very high-end animal specifically for this purpose, and not being successful.

Having said that, Tigers have nice stripes

Might I suggest a carpet with banding and tipping on the scales. Your carpet is beautiful! I have always been attracted to Jungle X Diamond and Coastal X Diamond crosses that have that banding pattern... so my final opinion for breeding him... Diamond pythons, Jungles, or Coastals would be great. Yay for mutts!
