HELP with bad shed

herpin1579 Feb 07, 2003 09:22 AM

I got a large 2002 amel corn last month in a trade and it is having a horrible shed. I have soaked him many times and he only managed to get a few sections off. In his tank is a large water bowl. Where the skin is that wont shed it is very dry and it is starting to kind of scab, what do i do?

I would put some neosporin on the scabs part and if they don't get better, then take him to the vet. The part about the scabs really concerns me, though, so I might take him to the vet first.

One way that has worked for me to get rid of the stuck shed is to take a secure container with a vented lid that is large enough to put the snake into, put an inch of water in the bottom, place two or three absorbant paper towels on the water. Then put the snake in and layer a few more dripping wet paper towels on top of him. Then leave the snake alone for about 30 minutes or so. It should loosen up the shed skin and a lot of times, the snake won't have any stuck skin on him after this. Otherwise, you will probably have to pull it off by hand after soaking him like this.

I have also heard of people putting the snake into a tied (so he won't escape) damp pillow case and leaving the snake and pillowcase in the cage overnight.

You might want to consider having a humid hide in his cage all the time to help with this problem. It is really easy to make one.

I always just peel it off myself-gently with wet hands
