Changing over to rabbits

burmer Aug 24, 2007 09:35 PM

I just attempted changing over two of my snakes to rabbits today. My 9ft burm slammed his with no problems. My normal female retic who is just a few inches shorter was not as cooperative though. I've had her since she was a hatchling and she has never refused a meal. She showed no interest in a frozen thawed or live rabbit. I was wondering if scenting would be an option? Or is there another method someone else could recommend? Thanks

Funny you should post this. Just had the same situation. Retic has never refused a meal. In the past my burm just went at it. Here is how I got my retic to eat it. It was all by accident. I put a thawed rabbit in the cage by the door. Left it in there for awhile. Then I saw it was not eating. So, I thawed out a rat. I put the rat on the tongs, put it in the cage over the rabbit and the retic bit the rabbit and ate it. You can also when the snake has the rat wrapped up place the rabbit on top as well, they just continue to eat. Then it will get the idea.

I have used basically the smae method with a little variation on several burms over the years that have had a difficult time making the switch. After several attempts of feeding a rabbit I came up wit hthis method. I thowed out a large rat and a small rabbit. Feed the snake the rat and let him eat it. Just as it is slurping down the tail(the last two or three gulps) I insert the head of the small rabbtit into the snakes mouth. You have to work it in a little to ensure it continues to eat but nothing to difficult. Almost always the snake will just continue on eating the rabbit. It has never taken more then three feedings like this before the snake would take rabbits o nits own. Hope this helps, Todd
