Bearded Dragon Hatchlings

mike3 Aug 20, 2003 04:52 PM

Hi at the momment i have 4 bearded dragon hatchlings. They are very colorful but they seem a little odd. 2 of the hatchlings are perfectly normal, climbing, running, good posture, and alert. The other 2 have bends in their tails, and seem to have trouble moving around. But after a few days, 1 of the wierd ones became normal, but the newest hatchling is acting weird like the first one. But after a few days the first weird one started to act normal. Is this because they are tired from hatching and they have to learn how to walk, climb and stuff like that. How long until they should start eating. I tried to post a pic to show you how colorful they are but it didn't work. all of the hatchlings have dark red spines along thier sides, two red stripes down thier back, red lips, red on the upper part of the legs, and one hatchlings even has a red tail. Is this normal coloring or are these guys going to be amazing??

tell us about your set ups, lighting heating etc, how old are the babies? are they eating at all yet? if so how large of crickets and are you supplementing with calcium with d3?

sometimes they will go their first week without eating as the yolk they absorbed in the egg is still sustaining them.

They just hatched within the last few days. Their siblings are hatching as we speak so they are definatly under 1 week old. They are in a 15 gallon tank, with a food dish for thier collards, turnips, hibiscus flowers and more, a water bowl, a basking spot around 105 degrees F and ambent air temp around 80 degrees F. They also have a heating pad on the warm end. I am not new to bearded dragons, so i know what i am doing. The only thing i am confused about is that all the hatchlings are a little odd. The way the stand up, the way they walk is just a little odd. It might be because they are getting familiar with how they should do things. All i am saying is they just seem a little odd to me with the way they act. I have hatched beardies before and my first clutch seems way different from this clutch.

It sounds like they may have MBD. Our babies (after their initial rest after hatching) run around normally and climb all over everything. Sometimes babies can be born with a calcium df if the mom wasn't given enough supplementation before and during her pregnancy. They won't eat for the first day or two, then they will stop being afraid of the crickets and eat them. They will start eating veggies soon after that. Be sure to supplement them!

Good Luck!!

thank you for telling me that i think you are right. I also want to say i am just babysiting their dragons and incubator so it is not my doing. I will tell them that they have to suplement their dragons food more often and they should feed them a wider variety of foods.
