Thinking about getting a Jungle Carpet Python

RalphSnakeMan Aug 20, 2003 04:57 PM

Hello all,
I've been thinking about purchasing a Jungle Carpet Python as my next snake, currently I only have colubrids and other small snakes, but I Was thinking of stepping up to something bigger. I have a few questions I was hoping you very kind people could answer.

-Are Jungle Carpet Pythons good for handling? (I like to handle my snakes, most of them atleast,(The hondurans don't like to be handled) I've heard Jungles can be agressive, will they atleast "sit on a hook" for handling?)

-Will JCPs readily accept F/T food over live, or are they difficult to acclimate to F/T?

-What is the normal size enclosure for an adult Jungle Carpet Python, I have a cage now that is about 5'lx18"wx25"H, would that be sufficent?

-Are there any special needs I should be aware of, for JCPs?

-And finally could someone please point me in the direction of a good care sheet for JCP's.

Thank you very very much, for a response, it is GREATLY appreciated,
Ralph

P.S. Sorry for all the questions!

After searching the forum, most of my questions were answered except for the caging question, so if someone could please answer that it would be highly appreciated!

P.S. Can anyone point me in the direction of a reputable breeder?

Thank you in advance,
Ralph

I use 2 foot deep by 3 food wide for my JCPs. Reputable breeders? Try these guys

One other thing to keep in mind with jungle carpets: they love to climb. If you have the space for a taller cage and you put some branches or posts in it, they'll entertain you by hanging out in the upper reaches of their cage some of the time. They particularly like to search out a high point when they are hungry. I guess in the wild they ambush from above when possible.

Thank you for the response! I will keep that in mind, I think I am going to design a new cage for him and make it taller than the old one, i think with dimensions somewhere around 4 foot long, 2 foot deep, and about 3 1/2 foot high with some perches for him...

Thanks again!

I'm pretty sure they can be but I just wanted to double check, also would a 4x2x3 cage be sufficent for an adult pair?

Thank you in advance,
Ralph

P.S. Are JCP's difficult to acclimate to F/T rodents? I know they are sometimes difficult to get started on rat pups, but how about F/T?
