Lonely Snow? -- Genetics Question

KenRoshak Aug 25, 2007 01:42 PM

I bred my Snow female to my SilverQueen Ghost male (pic attached) this year and as expected got 17 anerys from a first clutch and 13 anerys from her double clutch. Weird thing is I also got a lonely snow from her 2nd clutch. Should I assume my ghost male is also het amel but if so, out of so many anerys why wouldn't I get more snows than a single animal?

My friend had a similar experience this year and one I didn't originally believe. She bred a male Butter to a Snow female and also had a large clutch, all being amels, which is expected. But she also had 1 lonely snow on the double clutch.

Very pretty blue eye ghost.
If you got a snow, then your snake is definitely het.
Some times, that is just how the odds work.

Those are incredible odds though.
Statistically possible but still incredible.

I'm not sure but can't corns occasionaly have a unfertilived ovum replicate the female side of the DNA to form a full strand and thereby become viable? I do not remember the name of the process but I have heard of it with some reptiles before although normally it is a single viable egg among a clutch of slugs when the female did not breed.

If this occurs with corns then it would explain how two female snows could throw a single snow offspring in a clutch when the clutch fathers were not het amel. And would explain the freaky ratios.

Just a thought,

Sean.

I guess I can do further breeding trials with my male to see what I get when bred to an amel female. If he's het amel like predicted that breeding should throw amels.

Sean, your info sounds interesting and due to the strange odds I got, wonder if there is something to it. Maybe someone else will chime in with more on the topic.

Have a great day everyone!

on the lonely snow that was produced are the eyes bright red ?
i produced a ghost last year that when hatched appeared to be a snow and after its first two sheds darkened up and it was noticealy a ghost at that point. but it was pointed out to me that before the color change the eyes were not bright red but the outer ring was darker in color. has it had its first shed yet? can we get pictures of the eyes?

I'll see if I can get a pic of the eyes but it looks like a genuine snow to me. It hasn't shed yet but I'll check tonight when I get off work. Thanks for the input.
