Misc. herp pics, OT...

Tooks some pics a while back at the local museum's "Herp Day". There were no Rainbow Boas there, but there were some pretty neat animals. The blue colored Green Tree python was nothing short of spectacular, and the Gaboon Viper was intimidating... it's head was as big as my fist!

Thanks,
Ed

and that gaboon theheheheh one day shall be mine

natsamjosh Aug 27, 2007 07:03 AM

Hi Tim,

Right click on the GTP and ETB images, you can see
I named them "GTP.." and the other "ETB..."
I actually assumed the our fellow herp nerds would know
the difference.

Having said that, what's cool about these two species is that
they are a great example of convergent evolution.

You can have the Gaboon, no way would I want one of those.
I can't even imagine getting tagged by that huge head with
those huge fangs. Must feel like getting hit by a truck!

Have a good one,
Ed

i am dying for a gaboon they only have the worls longest fangs at 2" lol they are large beautifull animals and scary lol. only thing i dont like about alot of blue GTP ismost of the time they are just hormornal blue female just bred just laid eggs prego etc etc thats when most turn blue there are some that are blue all the time but most are just in breeding mode lol

natsamjosh Aug 27, 2007 04:48 PM

... than to not be blue at all.
That FTP was definitely blue due to hormones. I
talked to the owner, and if I remember correctly, it
had just laid eggs. I also found pics of it on
the owner's website, it normally is a green/blue.

I agree those Gaboons are scary. I don't think I've
ever really felt scared looking at any other reptile,
but something about the huge head and super thick body
is frightening. Post some pics of yours when you get it.
That's about as close as I want to be to one.

Thanks,
Ed

Whoops, meant "GTP" not "FTP".

Thanks for the pics.

Last weekend I went to the St Louis zoo, and saw lots of snakes. I did see one BRB, in an odd room at the north entrance. Their Burmese python is just huge. Nothing really stuck out in my mind, but it was nice to see lots of animals.

I did feel a bit bad, as no animals had hides - but then if they did there would be almost nothing to see.

Yeah, I've actually been toying with the idea of opening a local
herp museum, and that's one dilemma. Most snakes have evolved to hide most of the time. But maybe educating the public to benefit snakes/reptiles in general is worth making a few individual snakes uncomfortable??? Tough call.

Thanks,
Ed
