Axanthic question

EmberBall Aug 26, 2007 02:51 PM

So, I know this question has come up before, but I do not think it really ever got answered. If I breed my male VPI Axanthic to my SK Het Axanthic female, would I get Axanthics, or are the two lines not compatible?

Lines so far have proven to be incompatible.

And Bob saw the morph, that it was good; and Bob divided the morph from the wild trait. And Bob called the morph Albino, and the wild trait Normal. And the Albino and the Heterozygous Albino were the first investment.

You'd actually have Hets. for VPI Ax. (PDH SK line)

didn't see the "het" on the female. LOL

Do it and let us know!

Years ago TSK did the initial test with a het VPI male and several females of their line (can't remember if hets or homozygous on the SK axanthic side) and got all normals. They produced enough normals that it sure looked like the lines weren’t compatible. However, there is always some chance the male VPI het they got after coming through several hands wasn't a het (mixup etc., not accusing anyone but these things and sperm retention happen).

If you have a SK axanthic line male that would of course be your best bet. But if you where interested in giving it a try and ok with the high possibility that you would produce just VPI axanthic hets that are possible het SK axanthic then give it a try. Especially if you are interested in keeping back females, that could then be used for either project. Assuming the widely excepted belief that VPI axanthic and SK axanthic are incompatible is correct there is still some speculation as to if the double homozygous axanthic might be cleaner than either line by it's self. That is probably also a long shot but might be fun to try but no doubt difficult.

I'm hoping to breed a possible double het Jolliff snow female to a possible double het VPI snow male this winter. I’ll be happy just to get albinos and don’t expect any snows (those two lines have also been crossed and are believed incompatible but I don’t know the details of the breeding to prove it). I still need to try and get the SK axanthic gene but hope to eventually.
