shredded is fine but the urine and fecal matter will inevitably end up under it and making a mess......and when you feed on it they wil eat some no doubt...

just use sheets of paper ripped or cut to fit the cage floor....works better.......about 6 to 10 layers at least.....

it'll work , just line the bottom of the tank with sheets first , then pile on the shred.
been using newspaper since '83 , (sheet not shred ) , nobody ever ingested anything but rodent , best substrate known to mankind.

I used shredded paper for a bit, I didnt like it, it got kind of nasty in short order.

Also, I believe newspaper ink is now a biodegradable soy-based (in the past it wasnt) however, I wonder if your shredding ads and other stuff (if you are) if they are full of chemicals? I worked in a print shop a long time ago and there are some nasty chemicals (benzodine sp?) & things used or at least there were at one time. VERY nasty.
