Crickets Disappearing

natethegreat Aug 26, 2007 04:40 PM

Last month I bought 1,000 1/2 inch crickets. I figured that I feed 300 crickets to all my pets each month, so 1,000 should have lasted me at leat 3 months. However, I ran out a few days ago. I can't see how they could have escaped, but that is a possibility. I was wondering though, if maybe they ate each other. Having 1,000 crickets in a 10 gallon cage is pretty crowded. Does anyone know if crickets are cannibalistic, or have any other ideas? Thanks!

Crickets are cannabalistic. Crickets also have a life span of about 7 weeks. So if you start with 1/2 inch that is already two or three weeks off and only a month to go before they all die of old age.

What she said...

If they run out of food, water or hiding places, they go cannibal. Plus, 3 months is way past their life expectancy.

What goes up must come down...unless it exceeds escape velocity.
