Prolapsed sexual organs

rockofpa Aug 27, 2007 05:26 AM

I posted this in the Leopard gecko forum but no responses, I know theres some well knowledged people on this forum so I'll try it here as I'm curious if this happens to BD'S. Well on Saturday morning I woke up to a sight I wish to never see again, my Leo "Blue eyes", had what looked to be his guts hanging from is anus. Friday night he was fine but saturday morning I quess I was a couple hours too late, they looked to be already semi dried out. I put him in a seperate tank with warm water and moss to keep it from drying out, but it was already too late. So after some reading I haven't read anyting about the intestines comming out just the hemipenis. Anyone else go threw this and any info on how to prevent it? by the way this is my first post long time reader first poster.

I don't want to sound critical but I hate the phrase sometimes these things just happen. Although I'm sure sometimes they just do. lol.

In my opinion prolapses are all about hydration. Do everything you can not to let a reptile get dehydrated. Basically overcompensate.

Any prolapse shouldn't be treated lightly, especially if it has already been long enough for things to start drying out. I really suggest you take your leo to a vet. With hemipenes hanging out and drying they can die, start to rot or become infected and cause worse problems for your leo. If yours is as bad as you say they are, it is already too late to save the sexual organs, they will have to be removed by a vet.

prolapses can be caused by many things, including dehydration. Parasites, blockage, injury or tears of the vent area, an injury to the hemipenes while its out of the body, causing additional swelling so the lizards can't withdraw it back into his body etc.

Well it happened all overnight as of 9pm Friday night he was fine then around 10am Saturday the damage was done and he passed. As far as the dehydration problem he was well hydrated he had a steady supply 24/7 and was misted every night with the ocasional eye droper which he prefered. I read in several articles that these things just seem to happen sometimes for no apparent reason. He gave me no indication that something was wrong he even hunted and ate his crickets Friday night. Thanks for the advise and links and hope this never happens to anybody not a plesent sight.
