Boa Questions

HopeAlthea Aug 27, 2007 10:32 PM

Hello.
I took in a previously abused Central American Boa, and have a question.

I was told she's about 5 months old, but she's tiny.
She weighs in at a whole 1.4 ounces.

She had mites and didn't like eating, but that still sounds small.
She's since eaten a pinky, has been soaked a few times, and has had vita-spray junk.
She already looks SO much better.
You could see ribs poking against her skin before. And she couldn't hold on to anything.

She's been vet checked for parasites and came back clean.
And although she looks much better already, she still can't hold on to anything. >_<

So, back to my question.
How much should a 5 month old Central American Boa weigh?

Thanks.

That's a tough question, especially since I don't know ounces at all It will vary, depending on feeding schedule, genetics and husbandry. I would guess that a 5 month boa kept well would be anywhere from 100-500 grams. What's most important than size is body condition, and as you mentioned, being weak with your ribs showing isn't good body condition. The fact that this snake has eaten once already is a good sign, so be vigilant on a eat/poop/eat cycle. Dehydration will be a battle at first, it always is in emaciated animals. So keep doing what you're doing (the spray crap probably isn't necessary) and don't really push the food too fast until the animal is looking a little more spry.

Good luck

Wow... She was REALLY underweight then....
I just converted it online.
1.4 ounces = 39.69 grams.

So either she was really that scrawny, or someone told me the wrong age. Who knows.

Unfortunately, she passed around 10p Tuesday night... :'(
Seems even with the work I did with her, it was just too late.
Or the abuse she suffered came back to get her...

Thanks though....
