It took 3 years!

After 3 years of close observation, I have finally witnessed successful breeding in my Eastern colony. In one day, not one but two successful matings.

Here are Peepers and Butter. I have been waiting for Butter to produce because she's a big and pretty girl. She weighs in at 618 grams at nearly 6 inches in length.

I love late season romance!

Here's Imo and Bella having a romantic moment amongst the bushes. I'm especially excited about these two as they are a very colorful pair of Easterns.

Enjoy.

Love it! Although, I'm not sure we can call it love as Peepers moved on to two more girls immediately after. They were not so interested.

Cheers!

What has your weather been like? Interesting to see such late breeding activity in easterns. Where are you at again?

I'm amazed it's taken 3 years to catch them in the act, but I bet your work on your outdoor pens now all seems worth it! Our cool wet year here has kept breeding down to a minimum. I'm just now having our only known clutch hatch. 3 threetoeds.

Hey Nathan,

I'm in Northern Cal where we experience an indian summer. In Aug/Sept, we usually have a warm streak but that means 75 ambient temp but with so much sun exposure, the surface temps get into the 80s and 90s.

There must have been successful matings going on but since I work, I have likely not caught them in the act. I hibernated all my adults this past season so I'm happy to actually witness the females allowing the act to happen.

Where are you again? Next season, I will be in Southern CT so much will be different.

I'm in central NC. We've had the largest rainfall ever recorded for our area. Everything has been soggy all year until this last week, it's starting to dry out a bit. We are still getting frequent rains, but they've become short and light instead of the long pounding showers we've had all year.

I did catch my threetoeds getting frisky earlier this month.

I recently started moving them to their new pens, so all my turtles may be a bit skittish from the move, figuring out their new territories now.
