Breeding two years in a row???

tsusnakeguy Aug 28, 2007 03:45 PM

So what do you guys think of breeding a female in back to back years. I have a female that had her first litter this year and was just curious what you thought about breeding her again this year. What experiences have yall had with breeding females back to back?

I would believe the best indicator is how well she recovers. Her weight will be the best judge of her recovery. I believe that once you go past 2 years the litter's will get smaller, but I know a local person who breeds females for 2 years in a row and then a year off.

Really depends on the female in question. Back to back breeding can be harmful to a female that does NOT do well at regaining her lost body mass after parturition.

That said, if you do have a female that can regain her mass well, she can be bred back to back for ??? years. Take my girl Boo for example. In 2001, 2002 and 2003 she gave me trash litters, mostly slugs and a few stills. 17, 25 and 25 respectively. Had her for sale as a pet only (infertile) in the fall of 2003, almost sold a couple of times but nobody came up with the cash. Left her in with the rest for that winter and the next year - 31 babies, my largest litter ever. I guess she got the memo Produce or be sold. The following two years 2005 and 2006 she produced 26 babies each year. That's a three year total of 83 babies (and 5 slugs). Quite impressive!! The six year total is 155 eggs produced or 26 eggs / year!!!

If you can get enough weight on the female you should be okay....lots of folks do it. I choose to breed every other year. It seems too taxing on the females under my care to allow them to eat only 1 year out of two. My males don't seem to have any difficulty going yearly.

I think two or three years in a row as long as they put the weight and muscle back on is okay.
