which snakes can go in tubs?

scutechute Aug 28, 2007 04:40 PM

I'm in the middle of building a rack system for tubs. I'm gettin all excited about having more room for new snakes, and im wondering if some species don't do as well as other in tubs, or if they all do pretty well? do diurnal snakes need more of a "view" of the light?

Specifically, im thinking about Gopher/Pinesnakes and Kings.

also,
is it a good idea not to mix different species in one rack? for example, if i have corn snakes in a rack, would putting a kingsnake in one of the tubs on the rack be a bad idea because of the smell? would the corn snakes smell the king and start to freak out (afraid they might get eaten)???

Thanks in advance

The three species you named do just fine in tubs, just make sure the tub is fairly large if the Pinesnake(s) is large.
Otherwise, adult Kings, Milks, Corns, Pines,etc... do just fine
in tubs such as the "Rubbermaid" 7 gallon sweater boxes or bigger, or something similar.

As to the diurnal species, racers,Indigos, coachwhips, and the like,....it wouldn't be a bad idea to let them see a little more light(not heat) than some of the other types, but not really necessary.....but don't forget, that snakes get their breeding cues from not only temp, but also length of light(photo-period) in order to have a normal breeding cycle.

I always let my snakes be exposed to the natural light coming from a window, rather than a room with four walls with no windows. Otherwise, you would have to "create" your own photo-period to keep things in the natural rhythm of things.

That yes, many times there can be problems with housing other snakes too close to Kings!!.....I've even handled Hondurans after briefly handling Kings, and while it was crawling up my arm suddenly got a wiff of Kingsnake and totally flipped-out!! in a big way!!!

Just be safe, and put them if at all possible on a diferent level on the rack as far away as possible, and things should be fine.
