What now?

Sighthunter Aug 28, 2007 11:16 PM

I tried, I feel absolutely no affinity for Emory whatsoever. I thought if I hatched some a light would turn on but, nothing. I find them unattractive and boring. I am not throwing in the towel just yet. I will wait until all have hatched out and feed a few in a last ditch effort. I am hoping to find some encouragement by posting this. Maybe someone needs to slam me or maybe I need to slam myself. Why do I even post? Why do I even raise snakes? I should get a life? I think I will look into lawn bowling or some type of card game. I need some plastic flamingos and plastic deer to stick in my yard!

I'm not sure why you made the post but I would be glad to send you shipping cost and you can send them to me. Randy W.

It all started about a year ago as I had gotten frustrated with everyone posting pics of Emory. I posted how frustrating it was but I was willing to try so I could see Emory through their eyes. I decided, instead of condemning what I do not understand I took the plunge into the world of Emory. I was thinking something would happen along the way as I do like almost all snakes to some degree or another. Surly hatching some would sway me but no. I will give them a week or so and make a decision.

Yes, I could easily be swayed that direction, my passion is Racers from South America, Central America into Texas. Mostly Cribos, Spilotes, Pseustes and Coachwhip. There is a possibility that Emory is just too passive to interest me, still have not sorted it out. I feel guilty that I do not like them but not everyone breeds milksnakes either so to each his own. It must be just that simple.

Definitely a 'to each his own' type of thing.

I personally try very hard to always be complimetary of others animals/prefferences because they can be as personal and uncontrollable as hair or eye color. People just like what they like.

Heaven knows there is no rhyme or reason to my prefference in snakes. I mean how much in comon is there between Brazillian rainbow Boas, Argentinian Rainbow Boas, Subocs, Corn Snakes(many morphs), Pacific Gopher Snakes(natural and snow but not amel or anery), California Mountain Kingsnake, Thayeri Kingsnake, and Garter Snakes(Albino Checkered or Blue Pickerings).

Just keep working with what makes you happy and don't worry about figuring out why others like what they do. Sometimes there's no real reason other then they do.

Sean.

Let's go down to south Texas and get some really big mean, nasty a$$ tempered ones that I find down here. Once I found an old one eyed male that was even tempered on odd numbered days! Some can just about reach Nastycophus levels but most are pretty mild. The meahllys are kinda cool, albeit commonly boring.

beauty snakes, Orthirophis (Elaphe) taeniurus. Some subspecies get big and they are definately not passive. They are also pretty fast snakes, almost racer fast.

Bill, just stick to the big, gnarly beasties you know and love. Forget all these cute, small, inoffensive snakes. Actually, maybe you should try some yellows. I think they might suit your tastes better - not quite as big as Psuestes or Spilotes but about 5-6 feet of thrashing, yellow, musking bitiness should be right up your alley!

You fiend, how dare you insult the noble emory. The emory is a butterfly among worms, that deserves all the worship and adoration that you would give a deity. You've committed blasphemy, and you will pay. The snake gods will come out of the sky in the form of a giant pseuste, and you will learn the full meaning of the word "pain."

All you had to do was ask. They are yours as soon as you can find time to pick them up. They are cute and cuddly just the way you like them. Better hurry I am starting to name them.

Sight Man! You have a life. You raise snakes because they're awesome. Not all snakes are awesome to all people. Emoryi is just not your cup of tea. Albino's do very little for me, while many others find them to be the ultimate. Look at how much I like normal black rats, (the blacker the better) while most herpers find them too drab or too common. Your posting got me up to Kansas last Year, and it will get me up there again.
Let the the emorys rats shed once. You know as well as I, or anyone else that hatchlings look alot nicer after they shed the first time.
Oh yeah. I tried the beta carotine thing on that West Texas coachwhip that I've been holding for you. It definately colored up, especially on the belly. I'll call you in the next couple of days to give you more details.

Later.
Alan,

Cool. I've gotten my Waubaunsee county X Carroll county AK hatchlings to eat 3 times already. One already has red and black checkerboarding on the belly.

Sighthunter Aug 30, 2007 01:53 AM

Sweeet. I will shoot for a fall trip to Texas, this year has been a roller coaster. I will start collecting some black ratsnakes for your project. Can't wait to pick up the coachwhip, thank you.....Bill

No, no...this I cannot accept. If you cannot appreciate the noble emory, then you may as well pack up your stuff and check yourself into a nursing home, complete with lawn gnomes and yard flamingos.
Kevin

Sighthunter Aug 30, 2007 11:08 AM

I have no problem with a nursing home complete with flamingos but they refuse to let me keep my favorite snake, "peaches."

Sighthunter Aug 30, 2007 11:00 AM

I will start looking for some nice specimens for you the weather is cooperating.

well, you can't change how you feel.
You tried. That's a lot more then most would do.
If you don't like them you don't like them.
I really do like emoryis and can't wait until next year when mine are ready to breed but there are plenty of snakes I don't care for.
Take leucistic (sp?) Texas and black rats for instance. to me....whoopty do.. You've seen one...you've seen 'em all.
I just never have cared for them.
it's just the way it is.
I'm a die hard fan of bairds rat snakes. They are probably my favorite snakes but a lot of people find them unremarkable. Just a matter of taste.
Sell or trade your emoryis and move on to the next project.
Better then keeping them and wondering why.
