Juvenile question

miklo Aug 29, 2007 02:13 AM

2 weeks ago I bought 3 U.d.flavifasciata juveniles. They are about 6 weeks old now. I have notice that two of the juveniles sometimes sway their trunks. Typical male behavior. Is this behavior between juveniles an act of aggression or are this two juveniles males? I have not seen any fighting between them. And most of the times when they do this, they are "alone".

unless i am misinterpreting your post it sounds like they are going to fight especially if they are kind of circling each other. that is part of what is called combat behavior. they don't have to be males or even the same sex as each other. they may be asserting dominance or ownership of the territory. you will probably see them puff themselves up way out of proportion to seem bigger than the others.all this behavior i have read is designed to reduce injury in the wild by avoiding combat(one runs away), but if they are in close quarters(captivity) i think it is pretty much a precursor to violence and they will eventually bite each other. I would separate them asap.

No they are not circling each other. They are not doing this against each other either. Two of them can be asleep or hidding, and the third can be swaying his trunk. If I see any form of aggression I will separate them.
