Veiled's and Spiders

menagerie Aug 29, 2007 08:10 AM

I read in one of my Chameleon books that they will "readliy consume" spiders, and now I have managed to catch a really big funnel web spider in my front yard. He's about the size of a large cricket (which my male eats by the dozen) but I'm concerned about what might happen if Orion does not eat the arachnid right away. Has anyone fed their Cham's spiders before? Just needing some advice, since I'm extremely arachnophobic, and will be unable to retrieve it after I let it go in his cage if he doesn't eat it right away. HELP!!

Is he used to shooting at loose feeders in his cage now? Just putting a "new" feeder in there might not trigger a hunting response right away if not. The spider may just find a hiding spot in the cage. If you confine the spider in a large feeding bin so it stays visible and moving around for a while that may help. Most chams do love spiders once they recognize that it's food. But if you have so much trouble handling spiders I don't think it is worth it.
