Brevard, County Yellow Rat

DMong Aug 29, 2007 11:55 AM

Here's another pic of the "Yellow" I caught in my back yard on 4/10/05.

He's thriving well, and has gained alot of weight since he was caught, he was just basically skin and bones when caught!!
Also,.....note the semi-keeled scales that these snakes can exhibit, something many folks are unaware of.

Great shot! Did you have to deworm him? And how's his temperament?

DMong Aug 29, 2007 12:23 PM

Didn't have to de-worm him, or anything at all,....he just had a clumsy, slower striking response than they usually exhibit!
which was no doubt reducing his odds of catching prey in the wild.

I nick-named him "Slim Jim" when I first caught him, as the name truly fit!
As for his temperment,..he's great! never bit once, although gentle handling, and "reading" their posture cues has alot to do with that as you know. He musked just a few times after his initial capture, but I can't blame him for that at all, as he was surrounded in a circle by five dogs when I ran outside at night to see what all the comotion was about!.....he was scared to death!, all wound-up in the typical "S" stance, frantically spinning around trying to defend himself from all angles.

He's got a much easier life now, and is doing fantastic!

best regards, ~Doug

You mentioned the keels on the scales. Of the NA rats, are the yellows the only ones that do that?

My bubblegum has some heavy keeling, and that might indicate it's got some yellow in it. I'm not sure of it's origins (I know they're mutts), so it would be neat to at least be able to say for sure it's part yellow.

Your snake looks awesome. My first CB snake ever was a yellow rat, probably because it was only $25 from the pet store LOL. I kinda miss that dude.

This is the deal on these dudes,..........

In the early 90's Bill Love, then of "Glades Herp.Inc" in FT. Meyers,FL. developed the "Bubblegums" by introducing the albino Black Rat to his albino Yellow Rat,.......then introduced the more vivid look of the "Everglades" Ratsnake into the line, creating an even more colorful trait to the animals.

So this is why you see the keeling in your animal,....it is derived ALL from the formerly known "obsoleta" complex.

hope that helps, ~Doug

Sweet. Good to know. I've always wondered if there was some grey or whatever mixed in because you see so many adults with saddles still on them.
Thanx!

Great looking snake . My neighbor has found a few yellows in her yard and sadly killed them all with a long hoe she has just for that .
as far as she is concerned they are venemous no talking to her

Yes,....after forty years of being in snakes, I know the type of people all too well!!!!!....probably 98% of the general population are totally ignorant of snakes........it's been that way since the BEGINNING of time,.......and will continue that way til the END of time!!!

I guess she is partial to rats, mice, and other pesky vermin in her yard!LOL
