breeding question.....

geckoman2000 Aug 20, 2003 08:32 PM

After a bearded dragon mate how long after should i start to see a weight difference? What are some easy ways to tell if my female is gravid? Also do bearded dragons hibernate if the conditions arent right? what are the conditions?

Research is key. Just the order of your questions makes me wonder just a bit what effort was put into researching what you or someone else has done........but......as for the questions......... Brumation can really take place at any time. A bit of a temperature change or other enviornmental difference may trigger a dragon to want to "sleep". I think of it as being just a lighter hibernation. Its a cool down period where the dragons sleep, daylight is reduced, heat reduced, food intake reduced or non-existant, and hydration is reduced. Not necassary for breeding, but I think its good to cycle the dragons. Females will put on weight while developing eggs. Laying is generally right around the 3-4 week mark after mating.....so weight gain should peak out around then. Eggs should be visible by seeing a lumpy stomach somewhat, or should be able to be felt be gently messaging the females underside. It will be much harder to tell if there are infertile eggs in there. Females will act really weird when ready to lay......often going off feed, scratching and digging around constantly, and moving alot. Hope that answers some. Chris Allen
