My argus/flavi is very shy...

adainc96 Aug 29, 2007 07:18 PM

Hello everyone. I have kept monitors since I was 16...primarily argus monitors (and argus mixes). I just got a flavi/argus mix. He's about 2 months old and i've had him for one month today. He eats a lot and he has a nearly perfect cage setup. Every monitor i've kept, though i do not handle them very much, recognizes me and does not flee whenever i feed him, clean his water, poo, etc. My new argus/flavi dives into one of his burrows every time i try to do any of the above daily chores. Basically, I put the pinkies in his cage, leave the room, and come back in about a minute to find 4 pinkies gone. He is completely healthy and active (when no one's around). Are there any recommendations you can make as to how i can build some sort of trust with him? Thanks

I do not understand your post, you said you have experience, since you were 16, what are you now?

The problem is, if you had experience, you would not be asking that simple basic question. You would know that the cross would outgrow its shyness very quickly. If kept properly. You would also know that monitors are individuals, some shy, some bold, etc. Cheers

He turned 16 a month ago?
A few quotes from his post...
"I just got a flavi/argus mix."
"He's about 2 months old and i've had him for one month today."
"Every monitor i've kept, though i do not handle them very much, recognizes me and does not flee whenever i feed HIM, clean HIS water, poo, etc"

Just a thought, maybe that is his only monitor?
If not you would think that he would know by now with his experience that it sometimes takes time to earn their trust, sometimes they just will never trust you or become tame.
Maybe they confuse "tame monitor" as in tame like a dog.
