Prolapse

nyoka7 Aug 29, 2007 10:30 PM

Anyone ever had their snake prolapse? Mine did, (cali bananna King) and the vet pushed it back in, but theres no guarantee it will stay in place. Any suggestions or thoughts? He told me if the inflamation doesn't go down by not feeding him, his anus will continue to prolapse leading to death

Place a bandaid over the vent lengthwise. Sometimes purse string sutures are necessary to hold the prolapse in while it heals. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Good luck and keep us posted.

My Sorong female prolapsed this year. She was reduced and sutured by the vet. They came out after 2 weeks and so far so good. I waited for 8 weeks after the prolapse before feeding a very small meal. I waited another 2 weeks before offering another small meal and then after 3 weeks offered a more appropriately sized meal. She's deficated twice since then, then last one appearing normal in size. So far she's doing alright. Bandaids seem to work well on the chondros. I'm not sure how well they'd work on the colubrids who spend so much time crawling around on the ground. Might not stay on very long.I would soak your animal daily for a week or so and then every few days after that for at least 3 weeks or so. I soaked longer than that to be sure as I'm incredibly paranoid. Here's a picture of the sutures.

Thanks for the help and advice...
He seems to be doing ok. I clean him at least once a day, I try for twice. I've been putting the honey in the water and then just plain warm water. Theres just a lot of crust stuck to his vent prior to soaking, I try to get it off the best I can without hurting him. It's still swollen though, I'm afraid it's going to prolapse again with another meal and I hate to wait 8 weeks since he hasn't eaten in at least a month. I think the stitches are the best idea, I just have to find somewhere to go where I can get them done.
He has the bandaid on for now, we'll see how it looks tomorrow

Better to wait than risk another prolapse. I'm concerned that you say there is crusting back there. Sounds like there might be an infection. A trip to the vet might be in order. If any tissue died it can lead to sepsis.
