Question about heat mats and male tortoise sterility...

rudedogsurfrat Aug 20, 2003 08:43 PM

I recently purchased a Kane heat mat for my outdoor enclosure. A petshop owner told me that they can make your males sperm infertile if it gets too hot. I plugged the mat in and measured it at the lowest heat setting. The thermometer was showing 85degrees.
Is this too hot for a tortoise?
I was going to wait until it cools off around here before I used it because the lows don't go under 60 until Octoberish and there is already a heat bulb in the enclosure for ambient heat.
Any suggestions?

I doubt it. In humans its true, but they after a while they will start producing viable sperm again. But I doubt its this way with tortoise. Main because they take many exteremes. And such a low temperature wouldn't do much. It would have to be at least another 100 degrees.
