waxworm moths

jamster Aug 30, 2007 08:43 AM

well i opened up a 3week old tub of waxworms to find 5-10 moths in there (some escaped lol) but i was just wondering if they can be fed to leo's...not for mine as they seem quite big, but my friends leo is huge so was gonna give them to him, but wanted to know if it would be safe or not.

thanks

waxs worms are not the greatest for any leo... as you should know this from experience? right

im no expert but i feed waxworms occasionally, im not sure about the moths, they might eat them if they recognise them as a food. i wouldnt to be safe.

if you take them too a seperate container you could feed them a flour n honey mix (so ive heard) and then they will mate (or something) then lay eggs and die in a few weeks, then you can raise the waxworms and not have to buy anymore.real easy breeding. just watch food for mold etc

hope it helps

Honestly, leos will eat most insects they can catch. Some, esp. venomous ones, like some ants, and all spiders are big no-nos. Really, I'd be surprised if they can catch them. I don't think eating one or two would be a problem, health-wise. The main concern would be that the wings are harder to digest, but I have had a couple leos eat a full grown cicada w/ no ill effects, other than that it was big. Personally, I'd be interested to know if they'll take a moth.

well there was 3/4 moths left and i read that once you've tried to breed the waxworms and they've layed egg's, you can dispose of the moths with your herp, or wait for them to die.

thing is about my friends leo is that he's a beast. he'll ravage pretty much anythign that goes in her tank. even tries to catch the crickets through glass, numerous times and is very aware of anything. soon as i put the tub in there, it took a little while for the moths to realise they could escape (strange thing is they cant really fly, but it doesnt stop them from trying). he actually jumped on top of one and it was gone in seconds. i cant even describe the size of the crickets he eats. i try to feed mine size 3 crickets, and the ones he gets are about the size of his leo's head, and she loves them, and will eat 3 without taking time to breath, and is really thriving, and it isnt even 9months old yet, about 7. i'll get pics coz the size really is astuonding lol but yes, im sure the moths went down fine, they were half the size of what it'd normally eat, and has never had the problems i've had with waxworms. i'll get pics some time soon ^^
