End of summer sun . . .

JKruse Aug 30, 2007 11:34 AM

Both females, ages 8 and 1, soaking up a little end o' summer sun here in NY before going to the zoo. We don't usually take our critters outside much due to an unruly co-op board -- the vultures.

You mean most people in the general public......DON'T like snakes?.......just kiddin'!!LOL

It never ceases to amaze me the pure fright of most people, at just the thought of a snake, much less being in close proximity of one,.....even one as small and harmless as a Ringneck!LOL
Most people would consider the Gray-band you're daughter is holding as a huge, dangerous, goliath of a "rattlesnake"LOL

I agree with you when it comes to exposing animals, especially close to your home, as definitely NOT a good idea. There are way too many snake ignorant people out there. I learned a long time ago,......it's easier to have never shown a snake to someone, than it is to erase the thought, or the negetive repercussions of showing one!...........the old addage, "better safe than sorry" really does apply well with snakes!....I think most of us snake keepers can relate to this very well!

We were just talking about this because we're having a cleaning lady come on Saturday to clean the house. She's done it once before but that was a couple years ago when we only had dogs. Now we have two snakes, two lizards and a freakin' tarantula, which, truth be told, I'm not sure I've gotten used to myself! I think I might put the spider away somewhere for the day, this poor woman is going to be truamatized enough I'm sure!

I just sold my house recently, and the subject of what I was going to do with the snakes when the house was to be shown, came up many times from many people,....including the realtor!!LOL

I already thought of this little "problem" long in advance, and told everyone that the people that would be doing "walk-throughs"
prospective buyers, home inspectors, etc..... wouldn't even get the slightest hint that there were a bunch of snakes right under their noses!!LOL

I stacked all the "Rubbermaids" in the garage in one nice huge stack(of all sizes). Then when there were house showings, I simply put a blue tarp over the entire stack of cages, tucked in the edges,......and it just looked to everyone that walked by to be just a simple stack of construction material, etc....

It worked like a CHARM!!!........the house inspector's butt was only about a foot away from the stack of snakes when he was closely examining the "breaker panel" in the garage!!LOL....he, nor anybody else that came to the house NEVER suspeced a thing!!

The realtor and I talked previously about this, and mentioned that if ANYONE even knew there were EVER any snakes in that house, that it would ruin all efforts to sell the immaculate house, no matter how nice it was!.

Most people would have constant nightmares, thinking that there was always the possibility that there was one or two that got loose in the house, and would devour them in their sleep!!LOL

So the moral of the story is,.....NEVER give the general public any info pertaining to snakes, or the like(spiders, scorpions, etc.) unless ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!!!

There was a guy who was talking to his new landlord that posted on the forums about having a friendly conversation about the landlords iguana. Some time later, the tenant thought it would be cool to introduce his landlord to his 9 foot Burmese Python!............guess what?, the landlords wife "flipped" and told him either the snake had to go, or him,...no matter how secure the tenant told them he kept the cage!......he found out what we are talking about the hard way!!.......once someone knows,.......there's absolutely no way to take back that thought from the person that had the negative response!....period.

best regards, ~Doug
