Black skinned hairless rats...

jonathan-m Aug 30, 2007 06:57 PM

Anyone producing them?
I started out with regular hairless, but they were having some genetic problems (skin problems, and small litters, and the tendency to be a bit skitzy) so I decided to out cross them. My plan was to breed them to some of my solid blacks, and hopefully produce some black skinned hairless, which I've never seen before (all the while, achieving the ultimate goal of strengthening the genes).

I've been working on this project for a couple months now. I did the original crossing with my best solid black male ( I also crossed a hairless to my best albino male. The offspring from that cross should be having babies soon). I raised a whole bunch of the black x hairless offspring up (3.12) and I am finally receiving some babies this week. So far I haven't got that solid black hairless I was after, But I do have some half black half white hairless babies, which are pretty neat themselves (actually, their ugly as sin right now.... But they'll look neat as adults hahahahaha). And the most important part is, the litter sizes were good ( around 12 to 14 per female), all the crosses have good personalities, and the babies are all strong and healthy looking.

So far this has been a fun little side project. I wish I had more varieties than just my solid blacks and albinos to cross these hairless with. If anyones got any black hairless, or any other hairless cross I'd love to see them!

Heres a ic of my original group of hairless.(all have since been turned into snake food except the female in the middle, she's an excellent mother hahahahahha)

I have black hairless dumbos, black double rex dumbos, and nude dwarfs. They reproduce well and have no health problems.

There skin isn't really dark black but is is dark. When they have a solid black coat. The dumbo boy with the mask has darker skin now. I have a pic of his foot and the under side is black. I will upload and post it.

Well, All my offspring from these breedings are starting to open their eyes now and there are some neat twists.

I got a handful of non-hairless babies from these breedings that where white and tan, the same tan color of the hairless rat hair. Well, It turns out those are albinos. Also some of the hairless babies from these breedings are albino too. I definitely wasn't expecting this. I suppose It is possible that my "het for hairless" breeders could have picked up an albino gene from somewhere. But I Also bred my het hairless male my last group of regular hairless, and they produced the pretty tan albinos and albino hairless too. those have been breed many times before and never produced such. heck, they've even been bred to a normal albino male and didn't produce any albinos.

This is fun stuff. Exploring genetics can be a blast; you never know where it will take you.

I would be careful about using female hairless to mother babies. They tend to have problems producing milk.... not quite sure why that is. If yours is doing good, congrats, but if you decide to breed hairless females in the future, it is a good idea to have furred females that will be producing milk around the same time that the hairless' babies will be born. Just giving a heads up.

I have never had a problem with hairless not producing milk. I have only had 2 rats that didn't produce milk and they both came from the pound. One was a black hooded and the other a black dumbo. The hairless are so cute when they are lactating.

I haven't really noticed a problem with hairless females not producing enough milk to feed babies.
I've only ever noticed that with an albino group I picked up once. They were really really pretty albinos, but every time they produced litters the babies ended up usually starving and dieing. I'm sure you all know what became of that group lol.

I just had a litter where one hairless ...the body is gray and the head is pink...but hairless....

I think I saw a few black hairless in the litters as well...but I did not take any pics...I am raising only for feeders...but where are you? If you want the hairless you can have them.
