Fed twice now, no poop! (shed ? too)

MarcusR Aug 30, 2007 09:08 PM

I have fed my 2' red tail 8 days apart. She eats adult mice frozen thawed. She hasn't pooped once. I was told she had eaten the day I picked her up, I believe the previous owner she was bulging and the other snakes were all still eating.

Why hasn't she?

Second ? is she got really foggy, eyes fogged and everything and she still has not shed. Her eyes are clear again. I was told that once the eyes clear back up she should shed within 2 days. its been 3 or 4.

Please gimme some advice! We are watching TV right now.

If you just got the snake then it is probably stressed a little. I would put in a good sized soaking dish, cover up the cage and just not bother it at all for a few days. good luck

I got the snake almost a month ago. She is about 1 year old, was handled daily before by children and adults, they had 4 or 5 snakes up to 2 11' Burmese.

I brought her home, have fed her twice since, cage is covered, humidity is at 60-70 and the temp is right. I've been reading and reading, bought a book ect.

I dont think she's stressed out. She gets out and roams around on me almost daily.

Try to find a shallow dish that covers half of the cage so the animal has go in it at times. That's what I have done in the past with slow digesters. Now I am no expert breeder, but in my experience snakes seem to get constipated when the prey items are too small and several are given. Nowadays I give a single appropriate sized RAT(no mice)that is the same size as the thickest part of the body at each feeding. As for your shedding issue, some snakes just take longer than others. One of mine takes a week or more after the eyes have cleared to acually shed. She's doing that right now in fact. Usually mine will not poop while in shed either. So give it a while and try not to handle it.

I know you say that the humidity is OK, but the reason the snake has gone so many days after the clearing of the opaqueness, is lack of humidity. Enforced soaking is required at this point. Maybe the snake spent a lot of time basking or whatever, but that snake needs humidity. You can do enforced soaking, or make a humidity bin, there's lots of ways to do it, but do something soon. I am a fan of enforced soaking, but if this keeps happening then a humidity bin all the time is the way. Some boas have a chronic dry skin condition, and need more humidity than others. I don't recommend the large number of other things you might hear. Soaking and humidity bins are tried and true.

Even if she doesn't seem stressed out, she now has reduced vision, and she's in a shed, she's gonna feel grumpy even if she doesn't show it to you. Until she gets those spectacles off and she can see normally, don't take her out, except to soak her. You can soak her up to 3 times a day for an hour.

Good luck
