how big prey can a 15 ft'er take safely?

jamesk Aug 30, 2007 09:17 PM

what is the biggest rabbit you would feed your 15 footer on a regular basis? i'm feeding 2 or 3 seven pounders for every feeding right now. can my burm take anything larger safely? more items you have to present equals more stress, work, time consumption on my burm and i. i just want to make things easier on the both of us. sometimes i thaw out 3 rabbits and she doesn't want the 3rd. seems like she is just tired out. sometimes she wraps it then waits awhile or doesn't eat it at all

any info is greatly appreciated
thanks!

I'm a firm believer that smaller meals fed more frequently are better than larger meals fed less frequently.

My burms aren't that big and I couldn't tell you what size of what prey a 15-footer could safely eat. Let's just say that if it could eat an 18 pound pig without the pig leaving a huge bulge (less than 1 1/2 times snake's diameter), I'd consider it a safe, good, meal. But if the bulge is bigger than that I'd stick with the 2 - 3 rabbits. The rabbits actually sound better to me anyway. 2 - 3 prey items isn't a lot.

Maybe try waiting a little longer between rabbits per feeding, giving it more time to get the last one settled down. I know it takes longer to feed 3 prey than it does to feed 1 but I really do feel it's better on the snake.

Take care!

We have a 15ft albino green. She gets one 7 pound rabbit every 10-14 days. I don't know how often you are feeding your snake, but we like to feed smaller meals more often than one large meal every now and then.

I would cut back on the quantity and feed more often. She may not be eating that third rabbit because she is full.

I feed m 13' normal every 2 weeks. He just started taking F/T rabbits without me having to feed him a F/T rat first and chasing the rat with the rabbit as he finishes the rat. He'll eat a 7 or 8 pounder and want more but I feed him a 10-12 pounder and he's content. I agree with happyhillbilly about as long as it doesn't leave too large a buldge.

I would feed it a pig, and wait untill a week after it's fully digested before feeding it another. With the larger pythons you need to maintain moisture for digestion, and make sure they are empty before your next feeding. It's not completely necessary but I consider it proper husbandry practice to do so.

You should see people's reaction when I tell them how much a large snake drinks. They say "Snakes drink?"

I KNOW! I have to fill the bowl every day it's a pain haha. I have three in the same enclosure and when I fill the bowl up they all go over at once and drink it all again.
