Speckled King wont eat

christianlog Aug 31, 2007 03:10 PM

Hi I have a speckled kingsnake that I caught in Arkansas at the start of August. I took it home and knowing that sometimes they arent the best eaters in captivity i was worried but it ate right away. In fact it ate well and shed often. Now I have moved to school and brought it with me. I had been feeding it 2 pinkeys a week. Now I have not been able to get it to eat for almost 2 weeks. My thought is that the temp isnt right. I have a heat lamp on it all night, so it is probably 75ish in the tank. At night though I turn it off and my roomates keep the temp low, in the low 60's. Does my snake think its mating season because of the temperatures so its not eating. Can I just add heat to fix my problem? Thanks

Please do not release that snake back into the wild, it's my opinion that you may do more harm than good. Sometimes snakes go off feed in high summer, or turn nocturnal in their searches. Try feeding at night, ditch the heat lamp, get a Under Tank Heater(pad). If nothing else works, sell it to me, if it is not eating in 2 more weeks. I have a small colony of w.c. specks and have good luck with them. It should return to feeding if you had it going before. A vet exam may be in order to check for parasites. My .02!
