I second that. Anyone with any large adults? There should be some decent size ones out there, from when they first started coming on the market a few years ago, when the first guy wanted $1600 a baby, oh, then a week later they were down to $1000, a week later $800, a few months and then down to $300. There's some on KS I think for $175, hahahaha. But seriously, does anyone have and is enjoying these? Thanks. I personally did not - at all.
I lovelovelove my Melinus.
No pictures of him, though.
He's not very large yet anyhow. Just rather pudgy. Haha.
When I turned lights on yesterday morning, he instantly stuck his head out from underneath the substrate, and for about an hour just sat there, body and tail completely hidden, head sticking up, watching me clean up things in the reptile room, checking everything out and warming up a bit before he came out looking for breakfast...

Nice looking monitor, thanks for sharing. How would you describe your experiences with this species? I have only had mine for a short time, but so far has been a very interesting and enjoyable monitor to work with.

I know Neal has had a male for a while. His is pretty big and healthy.
I have a pair of V. melinus. My experience has been nothing but positive. They are both gentle lizards, and of much less nervous disposition than most monitors. I assume you have discovered that they are very aquatic. Mine spend many hours of the day, and often all night, in the water. However, this might have something to do with their now living in the desert, a long way from their lowland tropical forest home!
Some time ago a person who does not keep monitors posted that they were fish eaters. My female will not even touch fish. They much prefer mice.
I have also heard that they are very aquatic. I have had my hatchling for only 3 weeks, and in that time I do see him spending time in the water, but not as much as what I am hearing from other keepers. That might change as he grows older.
This one is surprisingly calm for a hatching, not flighty at all and will take a cricket right from my hand. As with all monitors, he is very curious and extremely active. This little guy spends his time up in the branches of the enclosure (when not digging, foraging or swimming). They seem to be very arboreal.
Thanks for sharing.
