choosing a thermostat...

Bergmantis Aug 31, 2007 10:38 PM

I was looking at the helix dbs1000 and the thermostat offered by the boaphile plastics (ranco)..It will be used to heat 4" flexwatt. My room is usually around 70-75. Any pros and cons in people's experiences using either. I dont know which way to go and was looking for some advice.

Thanks,

Mat

Helix hands down. I think the Herpstats have more features, but if Helix is the proportional you like I'd go with that. I don't like On/Off thermostats because you don't get dead constant temps.

Nothing wrong with Rancos. I've used them for years, and still have my first one. You can set the differentials to 1° for more consistent temps. (It works like so. If you set at 90°, it runs until 91, and shuts off. Starts back up when temps get to 89°)

Helix and Herpstat are also good if you'd rather have a proportional thermostat. They constantly adjust the power output, rather turning on/off.

Good luck

Helix is the only safe way to go.

Any "on off" thermostat is going to eventually fail. It is only a question of whether it weras out and fails in the on position or the off position.

I prefer proportional thermostats so I would go with Herpstat or Helix. If you are looking to drop the lows at night I would definately choose Herpstat they make a 4 channel unit built in night drop (no wires) for about 360 which is 4 channels and 4 10 foot probes or you can spend 130 on a Helix that don't have night drop and a 3 foot probe. If the 4 channel is to much thermo for you then get the 2 channel model then. So I would choose Herpstat if you planned on maybe one day buying more racks then you could simply plug in a 10 foot probe and no extra thermostat which means less electrical outlets needed and makes life simple

I currently have Ranco's, Helix and Herpstats. If I had to pick a favorite I would pic the Herpstats. They are the best bang for the buck and built solid!
