Need Tadpole help, please

Shaky Aug 20, 2003 10:07 PM

I have a swarm of Bufo valliceps tadpoles (Gulf Coast toads) for my students to raise over the next few months.
I have them in about 2 inches of water in a 30g tank, rocks on one end.
I plan on seperating them into much smaller containers to mature.
My questions:
1. I have algae pellets for fish containing spirulina. Is this an appropriate food?
2. How deep should the water be? Does it matter?
3. What percentage should I expect to survive?

Any online caresheets for GCtoad tadpoles would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
-Jack

You can feed them the algea sinking wafers, fish flake, frozen bloodworms (ony every once in a while though, maybe one feeding a week as a treat) and boiled lettus.

The water should be around 4-6 inches deep then when the limbs start sprouting you can lower it an inch or so. Do a 20% water change every day, no longer than every other day with fresh dechlorinated water. (you can use Amquel)

As for survival rate, that's hard to say. More will survive in captivity than in the wild. And it all depends on conditions, feedings and things like that. I would think perhaps 50-75% but don't quote me on that. I have raised leopard frogs and had a 100% success, then raised Red eyed tree frogs and only had a 25% survival. It really depends on the amphibian.

Good Luck!!! It's a great learning tool... My 2 year old found it very exciting!

If you ever have questions, always feel free to come by and ask away!!!
